Darren J. Cunningham (England)
Abstract techno, dubstep, micro-house
Lageos (Ninja Tune, 2018) with the London Contemporary Orchestra
Ninja Tune, Werk Discs, Non Plus Records
Unclassifiable and multifaceted, some constants have described the music of Actress since the release of Hazyville (Werkdiscs/Ninja Tune) in 2008. It doesn’t matter if we encounter him on a studio track, in a live performance, or a DJ Set. Darren J Cunningham finds, in every format, an opportunity to pose his personal philosophy and this lets us connect in emotionally radical ways to dubstep, techno, and house. In every performance, Actress builds a sound atmosphere inspired by a personal inquiry, from the biological and metaphysical relationships of living organisms to their own environments, through robotics, graffiti, and all the aural experimentation that AM and FM radio frequencies allow; it’s an imaginative arsenal of beats, samples, and environments. After launching AZD (Ninja Tune, 2017), an album that carried techno and house to the esoteric, Actress dedicated himself to deepening and exposing his own historical concern for classical music and contemporary composition with participation on John Cale (2018-1964): A Futurespective, the release of Lageos (Ninja Tune, 2018), an album which included the London Contemporary Orchestra, and which was the result of an incredible concert at the Barbican in London in 2016, as well as on a re-interpretation of Steve Reich’s Different Trains in collaboration with Jack Barnett.
