It was perhaps only ever but a matter of time before the sounds of Amazondotcom and Siete Catorce would converge to create something new. Both have explored the more playful edges of dubstep and footwork while maintaining strong connections with their own local scenes. It’s the border region of northern Baja California. Stella Ahn hails from Los Angeles and Marco Gutiérrez is from Mexicali. But it wasn’t until this year that the two began sharing the bill. The result is the magnificent EP, Teardropz. The four works on Teardropz are each a tour de force, with rhythms and frequencies branching off at alternating speeds, and demonstrating the almost-pop acuity and lucidity that Stella and Marcos can achieve together. The insinuations of a music that permeates trans-border life are still there: tribal, with minimal cumbia, and regional Mexican robotic ballads… but constructed from these two highly imaginative audio backgrounds, they’re taken to an entirely new dimension.
