Extended Program: SKALAR and other activities have been added to the week of MUTEK MX Edition 16

Learn how to take full advantage of your festival ticket.

New highlights for our Edition 16:

Collaboration has been one of the pillars of MUTEK MX throughout 16 years of history. Each year, cultural, academic and diplomatic institutions have joined management efforts with the festival in order to offer a diverse program for our audience through a range of locations, artists, and experiences. For our Edition 16 we are excited to present different alliances that enrich our programming this year and extend the circuit of possible activities for our attendants throughout the week of the festival:

Noiselab & WHITEVoid present: SKALAR by Christopher Bauder & Kangding Ray  @ Frontón México

Thanks to Noiselab and WHITEVoid, Mexico City will have the international premiere of SKALAR after their debut and residency in Berlin. This mega-installation by the illumination artist Christopher Bauder and the music producer Kangding Ray will take over the space of Frontón México with a loop of multidimensional sound and vibrant drawings and light atmospheres. By combining a vast array of kinetic mirrors, perfectly synchronized moving lights and a sophisticated multi-channel sound system, SKALAR reflects on the fundamental nature and essence of basic human emotions.

In a special alliance between MUTEK MX, Noiselab and WHITEVoid, SKALAR has been added to the activities that expand the experience for our festival attendants, with performances with preferential and guaranteed access included with your Passport or Early Bird ticket, as well as special discounts between November 18-24.

MUTEK MX→SKALAR: From November 18 through 24, present your ticket to MUTEK MX Edition 16 when buying your SKALAR ticket and a friend can enter for free. Tickets are available for purchase at the ticket counter in Frontón México. Valid with all types of tickets (Nocturne Pass, Passports, Early Bird, and Individuals). In addition to the 2×1 benefit, guests with Passport and Early Bird tickets will have a preferential and guaranteed access to SKALAR included in their MUTEK MX ticket.

SKALAR→MUTEK MX: Bring your SKALAR ticket to the counter of Fábrica on Friday November 22 or Saturday November 23, from the time we open doors until 22:30 hrs., and get a 15% discount on the purchase of an individual ticket or the Nocturne Pass at the day-of-show price.

MUTEK MX Passport and Early Bird: preferential and guaranteed access to SKALAR:

Bring your MUTEK MX ticket printed or as a pdf on your mobile phone in the preferred access lane on the date of the show. We recommend getting there at least 15 minutes before the scheduled time:

People with Early Bird Tickets: Wednesday, November 20, 21:00 h.

People with Passport: Thursday, November 21 21:00 h.

→ If, in addition to this event included in your MUTEK MX ticket, you want to return for another function of SKALAR the week of the 18th through 24th of November, present your MUTEK MX Edition 16 ticket at the SKALAR ticket booth to get a 2×1 deal for entry.

Noiselab & WHITEVoid
Since 2000, Noiselab has created diverse platforms to promote interactions and conversations between society, art, and culture, distinguishing themselves through the use of music as an element of cohesion. In addition to their digital platform and background as a label, Noiselab runs CDM_Fest and, in collaboration with WHITEVoid, the interactive design studio of artist Christopher Bauder, presents the Mexican premiere of SKALAR.

Brian Eno presents Condensor @ Nocturne 1 and 2

In collaboration with FF projects

Eno is considered an icon of contemporary international culture. During the last forty years; the British artists has not only been fundamentally influential in the music scene, but has also caught the attention of critics and curators as an experimental and innovative multimedia artist. Condensor is an immersive piece that pushes the boundaries of contemplative experiences: a ‘painting’ capable of generating infinite combinations of ‘colorscapes’ accompanied by an audio piece composed as Generative Music, a concept developed by Eno, in which compositions change once they have been played, as all systems behind said compositions introduce a type of randomness. Thus, Condensor has become a different aesthetic experience for each audience that has come across this piece.

Max Cooper & Architecture Social Club (UK) present Aether @ Nocturne 1 y 2

Presented by Adidas

Electronic music producer and visual artist Max Cooper and the studio Architecture Social Club combine to form one of the most fascinating pairings in the world of contemporary digital art. Their immersive installation Aether functions as an emotional instrument, telling stories through an audiovisual map of abstract forms. After sweeping through Lumiere Festival 2018, one of the most important events in the world for artists working with light, Aether will have its Latin American debut in Edition 16.

This is our Phase Two Lineup: Playlist + Gallery

Apparat Live, Caterina Barbieri, John Talabot and more digital innovation

With our Phase Two Lineup, Edición 16 of the festival solidifies as the meeting point for all the edges of the spectrum of creativity applied to technology: up-and-coming artists like Pétra and Maria W Horn will share the limelight with established digital artists such as Deadbeat; intense dancing sessions like those provided by Ouri and DJ Lag will be accompanied by immersive experiences created by artists such as Daito Manabe, Sougwen Chung and Joanie Lemercier & Joshua Sabin, who will expand what we know as the audiovisual format, incorporating technologies such as artificial intelligence and robotics. If that wasn’t enough, our list of highlights grows with the return of Apparat in their full band format, presenting a new album, and the debut in Mexico of John Talabot and Caterina Barbieri.
You can get a sneak-peek of our daily program and some of our locations, which will host live performances from our Edition 16. The time has come to take advantage of our last Passports, and dive into this year’s Official Playlist, updated with sounds coming from our Phase Two Lineup:

Sneak-peek: More digital innovation experiences this November

With the Phase Two Lineup the list of immersive experiences and multimedia performances has grown in numbers and level of experimentation: robots, cryptography, Artificial Intelligence and new technologies applied to lighting will take us, even for a moment, to new worlds. Here we have a sneak peek:

Daito Manabe (JP) presents Dissonant Imaginary

This immersive installation is the result of several years of research and experimentation between sound, images and brain decoding between Daito Manabe and Dr. Yukiyasu Kamitani.

Joanie Lemercier & Joshua Sabin (FR/BE+UK) present Nebulae

Nebulae is an immersive experience that offers the audience the opportunity to completely take off from this planet and get lost in the beauty of Cosmos, wrapped in moving constellations and nebulae.

Purform presents Enigma

An immersive experience designed for Domodigital, originating from the concepts of coding and decoding developed by Alan Turing, who sought to decode the Universe that we live in.

Sougwen Chung (CN/CA) presents Gaia

Extraordinary illustrator and creative technologist Sougwen Chung is one of the artists tracing the path for the artistic collaboration between machines and humans. Her signature is her extraordinary sensibility as a painter and illustrator, allowing her to create unique moments that mix distant glimpses from the past and the future, thus giving birth to visual creation. Gaia will have its world premiere in MUTEK MX

Vincent Houzé + Dave & Gabe (FR+US) presentan Créatures

This audiovisual ode to the immense diversity and life forms of Earth is inspired in our ecosystem’s abstract form, growing from micro to macro in algorithmic landscapes.

Ali M. Demirel: live visuals for Fennesz

Ali became part of the video art circuit as the director of some of the most iconic clips and video-scenography for Richie Hawtin aka Plastikman. His background in industrial engineering and architecture have become a strong influence on his style, which has evolved in video-installation platforms and big format live performances.

MUTEK MX Recommends –  September 10 – 15

New sets by Sebastian Mullaert and Kelly Moran on the radio. The mind-blowing new piece by Refik Anadol. Electronic arts and music to enjoy during this Independence Day Weekend.

In MUTEK MX Recommends, you’ll find all the up-and-coming news, activities and pieces from the artistic community that make our festival one of the most exciting experiences of the year.

This is what’s happening September 10 – 15 on the road to MUTEK MX Edition 16:

Refik Anadol’s most ambitious piece to date has debuted in New York

Easily put, Machine Hallucination is an immersive experience that imagines possible futures in the fields of architecture and cinematography. In order to make this happen, a great amount of data and 3D images on iconic sites of New York City has been intervened, reinterpreted and projected on a complex Artificial Intelligence System developed by Refik Anadol and his team of innovators. These projections takeover the new Artechouse warehouse in New York, which has been transformed into a space focused on the development and exhibition of immersive multimedia art. “A never-before-seen synesthetic reality experiment that challenges spatial perceptions” according to the review published by Surface Mag, one of the specialized media outlets present at the opening of Machine Hallucinations.

> Sebastian Mullaert in CDMX: Two amazing sets and one visit to the Anahuacalli Museum

A couple of weeks ago, the producer Sebastian Mullaert visited Mexico City, after conquering the stage of one of the Nocturne events in the recent 20th Anniversary of MUTEK Montreal as part of the Circle of Live project. His latest visit to our city was nothing but intense: he started by taking over the booth at Aire Libre FM station, mixing tracks from his next solo release and takes from recent sets by Circle of Live (listen to it here) and reaching his most exciting point in a night filled with energy and excitement with a live set of three hours at Normandie, presented by Dynamic Waves. Sebastian‘s intense journey closed out with a very special visit to the Anahuacalli Museum, where we interviewed him, you can check the feature soon at local.mx. During this visit, Sebastian planted the seed for all the expectations of what is to come with the Circle Of Live performance during MUTEK MX in November:  a six-hour collective dancing session with a strong energy exchange, conducted by the musical intuition of six incredible Techno and House producers: Dorisburg, Mathew Jonson, Frank Wiedemann (Âme live) and Mullaert himself.

> Save the Date: Immersiva Festival is coming to the CCD

“Immersive is an international Summit that gathers experimental practices of the fields of arts and science, based on virtual reality, augmented reality, mixed realities and several practices related to immersion”. For more than a week the CCD will become the meeting point between experts and curious alike, artists and makers interested in the alignment of immersive pieces, clinics, conferences, workshops and even computerized gastronomy sessions. See you there!

Inmersiva Festival 2. Other senses, other realities. From September 26-29 Centro de Cultura Digital. Program.

> Listen to Kelly Moran’s set on NTS

Kelly Moran’s summer has been filled with inspiration and new music. Taking advantage of the last days of heat and sun in Berlin, Kelly’s state in the world capital of Techno music has included jam sessions and recordings with Bibio during their visit to the booth of NTS Radio, where they recorded this session. This fall Kelly comes back to the United States with a few handpicked performances of Grand Piano A/V, including Edition 16 of MUTEK MX this November.

> New augmented reality experience by Aïsha Devi

EXT, the annual event presented by the English platform  Simple Things, just recently announced a program with talks, performances, and the release of special projects for multimedia exploration and arts. One of the surprises was the confirmation of the world debut of I’m not always where my body is, a new immersive experience created by the amazing Aïsha Devi. Crack Magazine has mentioned that this will be “an unprecedented multi-user Augmented Reality experience where viewers can collectively experience a 3D performance through innovative augmented reality technology, developed with AR specialists Pussykrew and Zubr”. We’re anxiously awaiting the follow-up in this new phase of Aïsha Devi before her arrival at our Edition 16.

> Vessel debuts a sound piece inspired on Clarice Lispector

Serge Gainsbourg aka Vessel will debut The Passion According to GH, a new sound piece inspired by the novel with the same name written by the prominent Brazilian author Clarice Lispector, which narrates a slow but tortuous descent into madness. Vessel composed The Passion According to GH during his residence at Somerset House Studios’ Rifle Range, an enormous historic estate (which could be considered a castle) built in 1547, which has a hidden studio that houses an artistic community in constant rotation. In this enigmatic and antique space and accompanied by Lispector’s novel, Vessel created one of his darkest and most intense pieces to date. After this premiere, he will resume his tour alongside the experimental filmmaker Pedro Maia, visiting Mexico City for our Edition 16.

>  Dates announced for MUTEK.JP in Tokyo

> Review: Highlights from the 20th Anniversary of MUTEK Montreal x Resident Advisor

MUTEK “has survived for so long by staying fiercely true to itself, focussing intently on live acts and visual art, as well as offering everything from installations, club nights and theatre performances to free outdoor dance parties.” This edition’s review by Resident Advisor includes five key performances. Will any of them be added to our Edition 16? Remember that there are still many surprises to come.

Which is the role of culture translated into sensations of the skin?” These are the questions that will be answered with practical and reflexive activities, directed at the artistic community. Sebastian Mullaert stops by Mexico City after #MUTEK20, a new Pedro Maia installation at Berlin Atonal, and the Open Day at SAE Institute Mexico

MUTEK MX Recommends brings the latest news and activities from the artistic community that makes MUTEK MX’s festival one of the most exciting experiences of the year.

This is the road to MUTEK MX Edition 16 from August 27th to September 1st:

> Pedro Maia: Negative Space, work in progress

The iconic Berlin Atonal festival presents Negative Space by Pedro Maia as a preview of his new performance in an installation format. In this piece, presented as a work in progress, Pedro projects 16mm films on three synchronized cubic objects filled with smoke, in a search “to deconstruct the negative space and give the viewer complete freedom to gaze into the film manipulations. The viewer is submerged into the image, becoming the subject of that image and of the composition”. To transform Negative Space into an installation, Pedro Maia collaborated with designer Marcel Weber aka MFO, who has also collaborated with Aïsha Devi in the scenographic design of some of her live A/V performances. This November, Pedro Maia will complement Vessel’s performance with live cinema.

> North American premiere of Organismos Oníricos by mexican duo Nueve Vidas & Rimiyoho

The colorful psychedelics of Organismos Oníricos (Oneiric Organisms) was part of MUTEK Montreal’s 20th Anniversary celebration last week. This A/V performance created by the Mexican duo also known as Nueve Vidas & Rimiyoho, made up of producer Luis Trasto and audiovisual artist Fernando Sica, presents, through modular synthesizers and digital illustrations created in real time, a multimedia narrative full of mysticism and nature. Nueve Vidas & Rimiyoho premiered Organismos Oníricos in North America as part of the Motion 1 program, sharing the stage with Sinjin Hawke & Zora Jones and Gaika, among other international guests:

Performance upon performance, Circle Of Live has become one of the most exciting and atypical projects that had ever emerged from the clubbing experience, thus amplifying the creative drive of live jams through constant change. The platform flows through specially located locations, crossovers with contemporary dance and, now, a series that gathers musicians coming from the classical music scene, bringing a whole new sound palette. In Concert will debut in Malmo, Sweden, with a live jam from the producers Sebastian Mullaert and Laurence Guy in collaboration with the cellist Gerda Holmquist, Elina Nygren playing the viola and three instrumentalists from the Subchamber Ensmble, under the creative direction of the composer Nathan Larson. “As usual we have no clue where the flow of improvisation will take us and there is only one way to find out.” Circle Of Live will soon announce new dates for In Concert, in the meantime guarantee your access and enjoy the six-hour improvised set that will perform at MUTEK MX Edition 16.

> Machine Hallucinations, the new high-tech trip by Refik Anadol

Refik Anadol continues with an intense season of debuts all around the world, and just when the Artechouse platform announced that he will bring his installation Infinite Space to their Miami branch, they also started preselling tickets for one of the most ambitious immersive experiences ever created by Anadol to date, which will be debuted on the opening of a new space that will be used exclusively for multimedia innovative exhibitions: Machine Hallucinations, will debut on September 6 at the new Artechouse location, located in Chelsea, New York.

With Machine Hallucinations, Artechouse will become the first cultural space to use laser technology for projection with a 150-megapixel resolution in 16K accompanied by a L’ISA sound system with 32 channels used in order to create immersive and hyper-real soundscapes. Refik Anadol bolsters these tools with his unique mixture of data interpretation, Artificial Intelligence, 3-D sculpting and transformation of architectural environments, making Machine Hallucinations a synesthetic reality experiment that projects and transforms images from iconic buildings and spaces in New York, revealing the hidden connections between the city’s past, present and future.

Anadol’s previous site-specific digital projections have been displayed at international cultural landmarks worldwide, but never before utilizing technology of this scale and caliber”, Artechouse stated. If you visit New York this fall, you know what to do first. And if not,   Refik will come to Mexico City in November, with the debut of Melting Memories for our Edition 16. Get your tickets here

> Watch an epic set from Batu in Dekmantel before his show at MUTEK MX

Batu is one of Dekmantel’s favorites, and for their 2019 edition, which happened just a couple of weeks ago, he played two sets, one to close the night on Saturday, the most important day at the festival, and a second one for Boiler Room on Sunday. On Saturday night, his distinctive mixing skills shined from 8 to 11 PM, gathering all the day’s energy, transforming into a dancing session that Resident Advisor considered among the top-five performances of Dekmantel 2019, as well as Crack Magazine, which simply highlighted that set as the festival’s “stand out moment” in their review. Although (at the moment) we can’t listen to the legendary three-hour set from Saturday by Batu, his performance at the Boiler Room on Sunday is now available.

And as a reminder: Batu will return to Mexico City at the peak of this momentum, ready to smash the dance floor in our Edition 16, tickets here.

> Circle Of Live expands their creative waves, making use of dance and analogue gear

Feeding the surprise and novelty factor behind Circle Of Live, the platform expanded their distinctive live jams set amongst producers by adding the British dancer Nikita Goile (member of the National Dance Company of Wales) and the live vibraphone of Masayoshi Fujita for their live performance at the inauguration of Waking Life festival, where they performed on August 14. With a live analogue instrument and the energy of a dancer like Nikita, known in the contemporary dance circuit in Europe, due to her organic and timeless and heavily improvised dance style, Circle Of Live is faithful to their commitment of unrestricted creation and artistic freedom. In this session, electronic beats and jams were created by Johanna Knutsson, Leafar Legov, Sebastian Mullaert (COL founder) and Matt Karmil

> The top 5 favorite tracks of the Russel brothers aka Overmono in Filter MX

“Their sound is exquisite, their breakbeats are addictive and they maintain an abrasive volume at all times through use of percussion, making it impossible to escape,” says Filter México about Overmono, the duo composed by Truss and Tessela (the brothers Tom and Ed Russell), while they present the 5 tracks that have influenced them the most, which you can listen to here. And remember that Overmono is part of our Edition 16, get your tickets here.

MUTEK MX Recommends –  August 6 – 11

New remix by Deena Abdelwahed, Agora to Fennesz now on vinyl and a new interview with Kevin Martin of King Midas Sound

In MUTEK MX Recommends, you’ll find all the up-and-coming news, activities and pieces from the artistic community that makes our festival, one of the most exciting experiences of the year.

This is what will happen between August 6-11 on the road to MUTEK MX, Edition 16:

> Agora, the new album by Fennesz is now available on vinyl

The solo return from Fennesz after a long period of albums and live sets in collaboration with other explorers of sound and visuals, had captivated once again an audience that has followed him since the late nineties. “(Agora) works in small, fascinating ways from moment to moment but has a cumulative force that is unlike anything he’s done in years”, wrote Pitchfork, and Pop Matters recommends the album as a “reimagining space and time”. Agora has just been released on vinyl, and is now available in Mexico. You can get your copy here and, even better, get a guaranteed place for the live performance in Edition 16 here

> Listen to the new remix by Deena Abdelwahed of Wraetlic

A couple of weeks ago Deena Abdelwahed stunned the audience of festivals like Dekmantel with the powerful live version of her album Khonnar (a magnetic, yet dark journey into the life of a woman and queer artist in a Middle East country), but she also showed her impressive skills with her peculiar way of mixing and creating new versions of tracks for her DJ sets. The remix EP of Ad Absurdum, the newest album by the Scottish producer Alex Smoke under his Wraetlic moniker, has just been released in the midst of this intense summer tour, including the remix of “Idioms” by Deena. Listen to it now and don’t miss the live set by Deena in Edition 16, get your guaranteed access here.

> What lies ahead with King Midas Sound: Kevin Martin in conversation with Echoes and Dust

“ I want (Solitude) to be a very intense experience to reflect what happened. It should go from a whisper to an avalanche of sound and it should be very physical as well as very cerebral.“

-Kevin Martin aka The Bug

Having Kevin Martin on stage, either as The Bug – live or DJ Set – or together with Roger Robinson to perform as King Midas Sound (KMS), is an absolute and tortuous pleasure. Only this summer, along with a few select shows with KMS, he has become a special guest to open shows of the stoner-doom-rock band OM and the noise act The Body, in addition to the presentation of a special set in collaboration with Moor Mother at Supersonic Festival. His diverse and extensive career as a producer and his careful and detailed approach to the live audio experience (The Bug may hypnotize you with his subtle ambient explorations or blast through any sound system like a madman), along with his sensitivity in collaborating with other art disciplines, have made Kevin Martin a fascinating and essential figure in the contemporary music scene. Thus, Echoes and Dust magazine went on the mission of having an in-depth conversation with The Bug, publishing a two-part interview, which you may read here (Part I and Part II) and here, you may get your tickets to indulge in the live session with King Midas Sound at Mutek Edition 16

> Two weeks away from the 20th Anniversary of MUTEK Montreal

Soon MUTEK will take over many iconic places of Montreal: ten locations will host close to 90 live acts along with immersive experiences throughout one whole week. If you are still looking for an international plan this summer, you may take advantage of the special price for the MUTEK Mexico community, using the code MUTEKxMX while purchasing your tickets here. You may also enjoy a taste of what’s coming to our Edition 16 with the live performances by Deena Abdelwahed and Overmono, among many others. One of the most beautiful, diverse and creative cities in North America is waiting for you, see you there.

MUTEK MX Recommends – July 30 – August 5

Written Works by Tim Hecker, Pedro Maia’s new performance with Robert Lippok and the musical side of the Tamayo museum.

MUTEK MX Recommends brings the latest news and activities from the artistic community that makes MUTEK MX’s festival, one of the most exciting experiences of the year.

This is what’s happening from July 30 to August 5, on the road to MUTEK MX, Edition 16:

Pedro Maia debuts a piece filmed in 16mm in collaboration with the producer Robert Lippok

Continuing with an intense year filled with audiovisual collaborations, the VJ and experimental filmmaker Pedro Maia has announced the de but of his new A/V performance, along with the producer Robert Lippok (who, by the way, we received with his amazing live act in Nocturne 2 in the Edition XV of MUTEK MX). This presentation is part of the first edition of RAYO – Expanded Visual Arts Festival, which will happen in October at the Film Archive of Madrid. “When formats become irrelevant, storytelling and experience emerge above form. The creators participating at RAYO work with audiovisual media from different perspectives, using less orthodox tools, but they all share the same purpose: expanding the audiovisual experience beyond the screen”. Maia and Lippok have collaborated in the past, creating immersive, improvised sound and visuals in real time. In Wasteland, we can observe and enjoy the creative dynamic between the artists, as a preamble to their RAYO collaboration in October:

Remember that Pedro Maia comes to MUTEK MX with the audiovisual performance Queen of the Golden Dogs junto in collaboration with the producer Serge Gainsborough aka Vessel. Get your tickets here

Hauntology and sonic torture in the essays by Tim Hecker in the book  “Audint – Unsound:Undead”

The editorial of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) has published a wide range of volumes focused on music and sound studies and Audint – Unsound:Undead, their latest publication available digitally and physically (paperback), contains two essays written by the sound artist Tim Hecker, who in November will come back to Mexico together with The Konoyo Ensemble. This compilation (which also includes Lee Gamble, among other authors), includes essays, research and philosophical contributions that intend to reveal how sound feeds the connection between what is real and the imaginary (either fiction, hypersuperstition or speculation), investigating actual sound events that relate to space-time anomalies and revises the use of sound to summon the death. In “Shocks on the body. The End of Life by sound”, Hecker examines the use of sound as a psychological torture instrument in some historic war processes, while in “The solitary practice of the vanishing concert pianist”, he revises the life and existential swoon of the experimental sound engineer Glenn Gould. Audint – Unsound:Undead, is accompanied by a sound piece, in which spoken word, music works and sound experiments related to hauntology are mixed by DJK Huysmans:
