MUTEK MX Recommends – October 1-6

John Talabot’s New Label, Ten Years of Dub with Deadbeat and a surprise in collaboration with Sónar Mexico.

In MUTEK MX Recommends, you’ll find all the news, up-and-coming activities and pieces from the artistic community that make our festival one of the most exciting experiences of the year.

This is what’s happening between October 1-6 on the road to MUTEK MX Edition 16:

>  John Talabot and Axel Boman Start a New Label

The long-awaited return of John Talabot in 2019 has been filled with long dj sets behind the decks, including a couple of all-nighters (here, you can listen to his live session at Moog en Barcelona) and his mixtape for Dekmantel 2019, as existing proof of his current sound. But this has also been a year for new music: this summer we had the release of “Immediate crash alert” and this week, through Instagram, John announced the debut of The Night Land, his new label along Axel Boman, and the release of “Discodrums”, a new single by Talaboman, a track filled with hypnotic groove and cosmic sounds that you can listen to now:

>  Enjoy Deadbeat’s Deepest Dub Sounds in this New Compilation

The prolific Scott Monteith, who is focused on training new digital artists and software development, just released a very special compilation on BLKRTZ, the label that has released all his productions and collaborations as Deadbeat. The Echocord Sessions 2019-2019, published at the end of this summer, puts together eleven tracks released by the iconic Echocord label throughout the last decade, transforming in a radiography of time and showing us the full plasticity that Deadbeat is capable of achieving, inspired by Dub from ‘traditional’ moments, such as “Vampire Dub”, to the acid frenzy of “For Whom The Bell Tolls”.

Echocord operates in Copenhagen since 2002 with Kompakt as their distributor, focused on dub and its most experimental variations, being their signature sound. Their catalogue preserves in physical formant the deepest Dub sounds of artists such as Vladislav Delay, Mikkel Metal and Fluxion.

>  Watch the new Boiler Room by Deena Abdelwahed

Deena Abdelwahed returned to Tunis, her place of birth, in an intense journey that included sets by Crossend, Da Che and Dasha Redkina, among many other Tunisian talents, which you need to follow up close. Deena’s set for the first Boiler Room in this city is a powerful combination of representative sounds from the Middle East along with some other Leftfield Club gems, a perfect introduction before her performance at Edition 16, in which she will interpret the full live version of her magnificent album Khonnar.

>  New remix by Sebastian Mullaert to John Metcalfe

John Metcalfe is one of the low-key cutting-edge cult figures from the past century. He’s the co-founder of The Durutti Column, contributing to the release of the sub-label Factory Classical, and his connection to the Manchester scene has led him to making arrangements for artists like Peter Gabriel, Pretenders and Graham Coxon, by playing the viola, his main instrument, in albums by artists like Max Richter, Goldfrapp, Blur and even Coldplay. What’s more, he’s part of the credits of the iconic album Hex by Bark Psychosis. In between all of this, Metcalfe has his own career as a composer and he’s about to release a new anthology with remixes, commissioned by five electronic music artists, including our dear Sebastian Mullaert. His remix to “So Clear” has been debuted via Beatburger and you can listen to it here. Along with the premiere of this remix, Sabastian has announced the release of his new record, A Place Called •  Inkost (Kontra Music, 2019) for November 4th, and the first single is out now:

Sebastian Mullaert will come to Edition 16 with Circle of Live, a six-hour long set, along Dorisburg, Frank Wiedermann (Âme Live) and Mathew Jonson.  Get your ticket here.

> Circle Of Life debuts a new series: In Concert

Performance upon performance, Circle Of Live has become one of the most exciting and atypical projects that had ever emerged from the clubbing experience, thus amplifying the creative drive of live jams through constant change. The platform flows through specially located locations, crossovers with contemporary dance and, now, a series that gathers musicians coming from the classical music scene, bringing a whole new sound palette. In Concert will debut in Malmo, Sweden, with a live jam from the producers Sebastian Mullaert and Laurence Guy in collaboration with the cellist Gerda Holmquist, Elina Nygren playing the viola and three instrumentalists from the Subchamber Ensmble, under the creative direction of the composer Nathan Larson. “As usual we have no clue where the flow of improvisation will take us and there is only one way to find out.” Circle Of Live will soon announce new dates for In Concert, in the meantime guarantee your access and enjoy the six-hour improvised set that will perform at MUTEK MX Edition 16.

> Contemporary Culture: Digi Lab 2019 in MUTEK Montreal

From these activities, we highlight the talk Are We There Yet?: Global Intersections En Route with Deena Abdelwahed, Dora Bartilotti, Julie Matson and Juliette Bibasse, the master class with Circle Of Live and the talk with Gudrun Gut presented by Resident Advisor. New remix by Deena Abdelwahed, Agora to Fennesz now on vinyl and a new interview with Kevin Martin of King Midas Sound

In MUTEK MX Recommends, you’ll find all the up-and-coming news, activities and pieces from the artistic community that makes our festival, one of the most exciting experiences of the year.

This is what will happen between August 6-11 on the road to MUTEK MX, Edition 16:

> Agora, the new album by Fennesz is now available on vinyl

The solo return from Fennesz after a long period of albums and live sets in collaboration with other explorers of sound and visuals, had captivated once again an audience that has followed him since the late nineties. “(Agora) works in small, fascinating ways from moment to moment but has a cumulative force that is unlike anything he’s done in years”, wrote Pitchfork, and Pop Matters recommends the album as a “reimagining space and time”. Agora has just been released on vinyl, and is now available in Mexico. You can get your copy here and, even better, get a guaranteed place for the live performance in Edition 16 here

> Listen to the new remix by Deena Abdelwahed of Wraetlic

A couple of weeks ago Deena Abdelwahed stunned the audience of festivals like Dekmantel with the powerful live version of her album Khonnar (a magnetic, yet dark journey into the life of a woman and queer artist in a Middle East country), but she also showed her impressive skills with her peculiar way of mixing and creating new versions of tracks for her DJ sets. The remix EP of Ad Absurdum, the newest album by the Scottish producer Alex Smoke under his Wraetlic moniker, has just been released in the midst of this intense summer tour, including the remix of “Idioms” by Deena. Listen to it now and don’t miss the live set by Deena in Edition 16, get your guaranteed access here.

> What lies ahead with King Midas Sound: Kevin Martin in conversation with Echoes and Dust

“ I want (Solitude) to be a very intense experience to reflect what happened. It should go from a whisper to an avalanche of sound and it should be very physical as well as very cerebral.“

-Kevin Martin aka The Bug

Having Kevin Martin on stage, either as The Bug – live or DJ Set – or together with Roger Robinson to perform as King Midas Sound (KMS), is an absolute and tortuous pleasure. Only this summer, along with a few select shows with KMS, he has become a special guest to open shows of the stoner-doom-rock band OM and the noise act The Body, in addition to the presentation of a special set in collaboration with Moor Mother at Supersonic Festival. His diverse and extensive career as a producer and his careful and detailed approach to the live audio experience (The Bug may hypnotize you with his subtle ambient explorations or blast through any sound system like a madman), along with his sensitivity in collaborating with other art disciplines, have made Kevin Martin a fascinating and essential figure in the contemporary music scene. Thus, Echoes and Dust magazine went on the mission of having an in-depth conversation with The Bug, publishing a two-part interview, which you may read here (Part I and Part II) and here, you may get your tickets to indulge in the live session with King Midas Sound at Mutek Edition 16

> Two weeks away from the 20th Anniversary of MUTEK Montreal

Soon MUTEK will take over many iconic places of Montreal: ten locations will host close to 90 live acts along with immersive experiences throughout one whole week. If you are still looking for an international plan this summer, you may take advantage of the special price for the MUTEK Mexico community, using the code MUTEKxMX while purchasing your tickets here. You may also enjoy a taste of what’s coming to our Edition 16 with the live performances by Deena Abdelwahed and Overmono, among many others. One of the most beautiful, diverse and creative cities in North America is waiting for you, see you there.
